Third Time's a Charm

The current Cape May Lighthouse is actually the third one to be built at the entrance of the Delaware Bay in New Jersey. The first lighthouse was built in 1823, but it started to erode. A second was erected in 1847, but was dismantled because it was designed poorly and the sea was quickly approaching it. Completed in 1859, the third lighthouse is still standing strong today- having learned from past mistakes.

The existing beige Cape May Lighthouse with a red lantern was first lit in 1859 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The light was automated in 1946. There are 199 steps to climb to reach the top which is 157 feet from top to bottom. It is a working lighthouse to this day and flashes a light every 15 seconds with visibility 24 miles out to sea.

The Cape May Lighthouse Ornament is an ideal gift for any lighthouse collector. Tom Pollard Designs specializes in designing the finest gold-plated brass lighthouse ornaments.
