The cousin of Jesus, John the Baptist is a highly reguarded figure who carries vital importance to Christianity. Originally the person to have foretold the coming of Jesus, John began the practice of baptism as the central sacrement of the messianic movement. He knew his purpose was to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah. His central importance to the faith includes the time in which he spent educating the Israelites of the coming of the Messiah and preparing them for the Kingdom of God. Upon baptizing Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended upon him- allowing John to know that Jesus truly was the son of God.
"In those days, Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him; and a voice came out of the heavens: 'You are My beloved Son, in You I am well pleased.'"
