A Rich History & Culture
Nemo me impune lacessit - "No one attacks me with impunity" - is the long-held motto of Scotland. The history of this hearty people is one based on strong morals and an even stronger army. With that in mind, it comes as no surprise when the British invaded the Scottish in the 1st century AD, Emperor Hadrian put into place the iconic Hadrian's Wall- which still stands today. Over time, Scotland's quarrels with surrounding countries (most notably England) paved the way for their governemt and culture today. Currently, the parliament established in Edingburgh is a direct result of the conflict between Britain and Scotland. As both nations signed an Act of Union in 1707, their governments were combined to create a Kingdom of Great Britain- which ultimately lead to the current system. Culturally, Scotland has been heavily influenced by Britain, as well as from the disctinct culture of the clans who first inhabited the land. Events such as the Highland Games still take place annually all over Scotland, showcasing a mix of sports, music, and community. Additionally, the iconic bagpipes and kilts also remain an important part of Scottish culture- with the Edinburgh Military Tattoo held every August.
