Spain is a democracy with a parliamentary monarchy and is officially known as the Kingdom of Spain. Spain's history goes back to ancient times, and its culture is very rich. From the 1500s to 1700s, the Spanish conquistadors were responsible for extensively exploring the earth and brought much of America, Peru and Mexico under Spanish control. Christopher Columbus, an Italian, set sail on the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria after receiving a commission from Spain's Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand in 1492 and ended up discovering the New World. The flag has stripes of red, yellow and red along with the Spanish coat of arms.
Spain is known for its bullfighting, its passionate and very expressive flamenco dancers, as well as its beautiful Spanish guitar music. Andalusian Horses, or Pure Spanish Horses, were prized by Spanish nobility and were known for their prowess as war horses. The Step Pyramids in Spain are still a mystery to archaeologists, not knowing exactly what their purpose was. A large part of their culture involves Spanish wine. This nation is the third largest producer of wine in the world- with over 2.9 million acres dedicated to growing and processing wine. Records show that Spaniards drink (on average) consume 21.6 liters of wine per person per year!
