A Screw-Pile Lighthouse

The current Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is the third to be built at the mouth of the South River. It is a screw-pile lighthouse that was first lit on November 20, 1875. Built in the classic cottage-style in the shape of a hexagon, the 1-1/2 story wooden cottage is equipped with both a light and a foghorn. It rests on seven 10-inch wrought iron screwpiles which are screwed 11-1/2 feet into the sandy floor.

Specifications

The lighthouse is 35 feet in diameter and is 43 feet above the water level. Stone was placed around the lighthouse in the 1880s to help protect it as well as three connected screwpiles on the northern side which help protect the foundation from ice flow damage.
